Chapter 15

Macy

I looked at the motorcycle with some trepidation and asked the three other wolf-kind remaining at the compound, “So let me get this straight, your plan is to ride out on these, pick a random facility that she knows about,” I said stabbing a finger in Ava’s direction, “infiltrate it, and cause what mayhem we can all while hoping we don’t die?”

“Macy,” Evan said pinching the bridge of his nose and I shook my head.

“Don’t ‘Macy’ me, I think we’re officially all insane.”

“Oh?” Remus’ voice rolled across the small clearing at the end of the long track of the driveway like thunder across the sky. He’d caught what I’d said… ‘we’ as in I was insane too for going along with this harebrained notion.

“Absolutely,” I said and his lips quirked in a subtle smile.

“You have a better idea, Princess?” Ava asked and I shook my head.

I had been putting two and two together, silently over the last several weeks as I built my stock and stores of herbs and tinctures and after talking with Ava, had come to one conclusion. I leveled Remus with my gaze and said, “No, I don’t, but we can’t let them do what they’re planning to do. We can’t let anyone else suffer any of the indignities we have.”

Remus cocked his head to the side and considered me, raising a hand when Evan started to speak. I shifted uncomfortably in place and swallowed hard.

“You got something to say?” Remus asked, and suddenly I was the center of everyone’s scrutiny.

“Mace?” Evan asked softly when I’d been silent for too long.

“You’re Blood Born,” I uttered and Remus nodded.

“What’s that have to do with anything?” Ava asked.

I sniffed and shook my head and Evan was suddenly in front of me, blocking their view, his hands gentle where they gripped my elbows. I was hugging myself and he smoothed his hands up and down my upper arms. A comforting gesture, with a touch of romance to it, though likely I felt that way simply because he loved me. Self-conscious, I took a step back, shooting him an apologetic look.

Evan sighed, “Mace, has this got something to do with what they did to you… before they put us back together?” I pursed my lips tightly and nodded, and Evan looked defeated.

“You’re safe here, none of us are without enough sin to cast any stones,” Remus said and swallowed hard, “What have you got to say?”

“Question, and pardon me for being… indelicate, but did they take something from you when you were held?” I asked, staring at him intently.

Remus’ dark gaze sharpened and I felt my mouth go dry, afraid like some of the other Alphas I had been under, he would grow violent at the implications but I still needed to know, it was important to me somehow.

“Blood, spinal fluid, and some other things… why?”

“I heard them talking, while they did their experiments… they said they’d acquired a Blood Born’s,” I cleared my throat and tried to figure out how to phrase it.
